CONTEXT NOTE
On Sudan
Brief Context
Sudan is a country in northeastern Africa, bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic and Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. Its capital is Khartoum, situated at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile.
Sudan has one of the longest histories of any nation-state on the continent, home to successive ancient Nubian kingdoms before Arab and Ottoman influence, then British-Egyptian colonial rule, and independence in 1956. The country has since experienced significant political turbulence, including military coups, civil war (leading to South Sudan's secession in 2011), and ongoing conflict including the civil war that began in April 2023.
